J.R. Roth wins Tournament of Champions, ties all-time titles record

Posted: Updated:

J.R. Roth says the reason he continues to play in the Michigan PGA Tournament of Champions every year, despite the fact that he resides in New Mexico, is to set the record for most career Michigan Major titles.

On Wednesday, Roth used a 3-stroke win at the T.O.C. to tie Al Watrous's all-time mark of 15 career Michigan Major titles.

Roth began the day in a 3-way tie for the lead alongside mini-tour player Martin Jeppesen and 1986 Michigan Open Champion Tim Matthews.  He ended the day with his second-straight 68 to finish at -10 overall.  Jeppesen finished as T.O.C. runner-up at -7.  Matthews tied top amateur, Wesley Gates, for third at -5.

Defending Champion Lee Houtteman finished tied for 16th at even par.  Other local notables include:  Randy Hutchison (T-6th, -4), Scott Hebert (T-10th, -3), Ian Ziska (T-10th, -3) and Barry Redmond (13th, -2).
