Staying Safe on the Water

Posted: Updated:

Sadly northern Michigan has had its share of tragedies on the water this summer but there are many ways to keep your loved ones safe.

Roscommon County's Marine Division says wearing a life jacket and understanding life jacket laws is extremely important. Children six and under must wear an approved life jacket while on a boat and there must be enough on board for every passenger.

Deputies say if someone falls in you should first try throwing them something that floats. If you do decide to go in, they say put a life jacket on and bring another one with you for the person you are rescuing.

Boats should also keep a safe distance from swimmers and other vessels on the water.

Drinking alcohol results in many boating accidents. The sheriff's department says driving a boat under the influence is just as serious as driving a car drunk.

9 and 10's Kyle Mitchell and photojournalist Tyler Hampton have more on how to stay safe.
