Feedback at 5:00- Leave Work for School Events

Posted: Updated:

A new bill introduced in Lansing would give parents permission to take time away from work and take part in their children's school activities without worrying about losing their jobs.

It's called the "Family Education Leave Act" and it would give unpaid time to employees, and put a stop to discrimination against workers who ask for the time.

The time could not be longer than 10 hours for each child in an academic year.

That means they could attend events like in school conferences.

State Senator Burt Johnson, from Detroit, says he does not want parents to face problems at work just because they want to play an active role in their child's education.

For tonight's "Feedback at 5:00," do you think parents should be allowed to leave work for school events? Why or why not?
