Rain Brings Relief to Local Farmers

Posted: Updated:

The rain brought some much needed relief to farmers battling dry conditions.

Many farms in Missaukee County saw several inches.

The rain came so fast it turned fields into small lakes but farmers think the majority of the water will absorb before it cuts off oxygen to the roots and causes damage.

The farmers we spoke with said the rain came at a crucial time when the corn crop is going through pollination.

The MSU Extension office says if farmers received three inches of rain or more that could get them through the next couple weeks under average temperatures. However, farmers would still like even more rain.

9 and 10's Kyle Mitchell and photojournalist Jacob Johnson have more on what the rain meant to northern Michigan farmers.
