Local Tribes Come Together for Burial on Mackinac Island

Posted: Updated:

The Turtle Mound is a sacred burial site for Native American Tribes.

In the pouring rain underneath a canopy of trees at St. Ann's cemetery on Mackinac Island, finally... some rest.

Tribes around the state came together for this day.

Decades ago, remains discovered in St Ignace and islands around Mackinac were sent to universities for research, but this afternoon- those remains are finally where they belong.

We were asked not to film during the sacred burial, which featured music, fire, chanting and most importantly- the coming together for something good.

9&10's Kalin Franks and Photojournalist Eric Davis were at the ceremony today and have more.
