DNR: Hot Weather Causing Some Fish Die Offs

Posted: Updated:

The hot weather is starting to take its toll on northern Michigan fish.

The Department of Natural Resources' Cadillac Office has received several reports of small scale die offs of Northern Pike. This includes Round Lake in Mason County and Wolf Lake in Lake County.

Biologists say the warm weather is to blame. Warmer water holds less oxygen so fish try to swim to the deeper cooler water if possible to find relief. The die offs are occurring in shallow lakes.

Species like Bluegill and Large Mouth Bass actually thrive in warmer water but Trout and Northern Pike have a hard time surviving.

The D.N.R. says while the die-offs are small, they are pretty rare for northern Michigan during the summer months.

The department says you will not notice a difference in the fish population if you go fishing.

9 and 10's Kyle Mitchell and photojournalist Jeff Blevins have more on how the hot weather is affecting some populations of fish.
