104th Chicago to Mack Race Brings Smooth Sailing, 1 Year After Accident

Posted: Updated:

Images from last year's Chicago to Mack Race are hard to forget.

Two sailors were killed last year when their vessel capsized during a severe storm on Lake Michigan.

This year, the world famous race is in it's 104th running and the tradition of freshwater sailing to one of the most beautiful destinations in the country is going strong.

The 2012 race featured more than 300 boats and 3,000 crew members who left Chicago on either Friday or Saturday.

This afternoon the bulk of the boats had arrived to the island, crossing the finish line with a canon firing and cheers from the crowd.

9&10's Kalin Franks and Eric Davis were on the island today learning about new safety regulations and the success of this year's race.
