A 4-year-old died when he was hit by a van on the side of the road.

It happened just south of Lakeshore Drive in Leelanau County's Centerville Township around 8:00pm on Sunday.

Police tell us Margaret Punter was walking about the shoulder of the road with her 4-year-old grandson, Gavin Punter, who was on a tractor tricycle.

A van hit the child and the boy died at the scene.

Neither the grandmother or driver were hurt.

It's unknown what will happen to the driver.
