Coast Guard Cleaning up Diesel From Sunken Barge in Lake Huron

Posted: Updated:

A barge sunk in Lake Huron, the Coast Guard says around 1,500 gallons of oil spilled as the vessel went under.

The barge is 2 miles south of Lakeport.

The commercial barge was being pushed by a tugboat early today when it went down in stormy waters about 5 miles northwest of the St. Clair River.

As the barge went down, the tugboat flipped over.

Everyone from both vessels is accounted for.

The dredge can hold 8,000 gallons of fuel, but at the time it was carrying only 1,500.

Booms are in place, but weather may slow down cleanup.
