Dive Teams Inspect The Mackinac Bridge

Posted: Updated:

Just about everyone goes over the Mackinac Bridge.

Today, some people are spending time underneath it.

Safety inspections are in their third week right now on the bridge.

You won't be able to see all of them -- dive teams are taking an underwater look at the dozens of piers that make up the Mighty Mac.

The piers range from just 3 feet -- to 140 feet under the lake surface.

"They (the divers) have to scrape off the zebra muscles, enough of the piers so they can see what's going on there... They take photographs of things of note, and sometimes take videos... They look for things like cracks and chips, and damage," says Kim Nowack, with the Mackinac Bridge Authority.

So far, so good -- divers haven't found any major underwater issues.

9&10's Evan Dean and Photojournalist Tony Zyber were on the bridge today -- they have more on the Mighty Mac maintenance.
