Port Huron - Mackinac Race Means Big Business for Island

Posted: Updated:

Some say its the wind... The open water.... The adrenaline rush of the race... Crossing the finish line at one of the most unique places in the country is just the cherry on top for sailors.

Sailors can never be certain of what conditions lie ahead on the water.

And business owners can never assume the wind will be at their backs, either. The Bell's Beer Bayview Mackinac race means big things for sailing, and for the Mackinac Island economy.

Boats and their crews began crossing the finish line yesterday, and crews continued finishing throughout the day.

The positive impact for businesses doesn't just stay on the island, tourism officials say the event is huge for the state, with families traveling from different areas and spending money along the way.

9&10's Kalin Franks and photojournalist Eric Davis were on the island today and have more on the exciting event.
