Lake Access Feud Escalates in Clare County

Posted: Updated:

The argument is so hot police were called to mediate a township meeting.  It's all over who is, or isn't allowed to use beaches and boat launches in Hamilton Township.

People in Hamilton Township in Clare County have been feuding over access to their lakes for years.

The beaches and boat launches had been open to everyone ever since the property was developed in the 60's.  But, those who live nearby say they're tired of the drugs, sex and fighting and that's why they've taken it on themselves to close the beaches to the public.

Those who live near the beaches say they're deeded to the subdivisions and it's their right to close them to the public.   They've put up these signs making it clear if you're not in the right plat section they don't want you on their beach.

But, township residents who do not live in the sections designated to use the beaches still have to pay taxes to maintain the lakes.

An attorney spoke at the township meeting saying those who put these signs up have every right to do it unless a judge says otherwise.  Those who are no longer able to use boat launches or visit their favorite beaches say they plan on going to court and having them rule just that.
