State Police: New Meth Waste Disposal System Will Save Time and Money

Posted: Updated:

A new program hopes to speed up meth lab clean up times and save money.

The state police is installing seven secure storage pods across Michigan to house dangerous meth lab by products.

One the pods was delivered to the state police post in Houghton Lake on Monday.

After a lab is discovered, specially trained teams remove the waste and neutralize it. It often takes hours for the by products to be picked up. Drug teams will soon be able to take the chemicals to the pods instead, saving time. They also expect to save money because disposal companies will not have to make as many trips to pick up the waste.

The pods will only store meth waste, not the drug in a useable form.

Police hope to have the program fully operational by the beginning of September.

9 and 10's Kyle Mitchell and photojournalist Tony Zyber have more on how the new disposal system works.
