Heritage Day at National Cherry Festival Celebrates Native American Culture

Posted: Updated:

Heritage Day at the National Cherry Festival brings together hundreds of Native Americans; a way to share their long standing traditions with the community.

Their anthem song is sacred, photos and video aren't allowed. An intimate experience for those here. But, when the traditional Pow Wow gets underway, the music and the dancing are contagious, everyone joins in.

You'll notice no two people are dressed exactly the same. Each part of their outfit means something dear to their culture. For them, today celebrates their history in northern Michigan.

Reporting in Traverse City, Sara Simnitch and Photojournalist, Jeremy Erickson.
