Eight Girls at Summer Camp Sent to Hospital After Sharing Drink Spiked with Acetone

Posted: Updated:

The Lake County Sheriff says eight girls at a summer camp went to the hospital after sharing a sports drink spiked with Acetone.

None of the girls are showing symptoms after drinking a small amount of the substance but doctors examined them just to be safe. The sheriff says the girls were approximately 12-Years-Old.

The girls consumed the drink sometime Monday night at the Tall Oaks Youth Camp near Baldwin. Deputies were called to the camp Tuesday morning.

The sheriff says there was some kind of disagreement between two of the campers and one placed an Acetone based substance in the sports drink that was later shared. Acetone is an ingredient often found in products like nail polish remover, however it is not clear where the substance came from. Consuming large quantities would result in symptoms similar to drinking alcohol.

The department will send their report to the prosecutor's office for review. The camp declined to comment.

Sheriff Hilts commended the camp for how it handled the situation and for responding quickly.
