125 Years After Opening, The Grand Hotel Still a World Class Destination

Posted: Updated:

The porch ... Unmistakable to so many in Northern Michigan and beyond ... Built and enjoyed by generations... Long outlasting those who made this a destination.

The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island opened its doors on July 10 1887, making today its historic 125th birthday.

Enormous American flags line the world famous 660-foot long porch, which is buzzing with birthday excitement. For more than a century of summers, no matter the economic landscape on the mainland, The Grand Hotel shines brightly.

The hotel was an escape for city dwellers, who wanted fresh air, beautiful views and to cool off during the summer heat.

Hotel management says the staff is the secret to its success, going the extra mile to make a hotel stay an experience. Taking guests back in time .. Making 2012 feel more like 1887.

9&10's Kalin Franks and Eric Davis were on the island today, and have more on the celebration.
