Enbridge's Slow Response to Cracks Blamed for Massive Oil Spill

Posted: Updated:

Federal investigators found the cause in Michigan of the most expensive onshore oil spill in U.S. history.

They say a Canadian company's neglect of cracks in one of its oil pipelines and slow response to a 2010 rupture caused the onshore spill.

The NTSB says Enbridge knew about the cracks in its pipeline near Marshall but failed to address them adequately before the rupture.

The July 2010 spill dumped 843,000 gallons of crude into the Kalamazoo River and an enjoining creek.

The cleanup cost about $800 million and is finally nearing completion.

Board members will be voting tonight on whether to reject, amend or accept the investigators' findings.
