Nearly 40 Layoffs with CAPS Privatization

Posted: Updated:

Monday night, after months of uncertainty, 39 Cadillac School employees learned they will lose their jobs.   The CAPS School Board unanimously voted to privatize the districts food and custodial services.

The district faces a $1.4 million budget deficit next year, they say this decision will save more than $400,000 but at the expense of nearly 40 employees.

Those losing their jobs say they feel it was a snap decision, the district says that isn't true.  The school board says at the end of the day this is what's best for the kids.

The employees laid off will have the option to apply with the newly contracted companies.  But, many say they will make more money receiving unemployment than what the new company will pay.

9&10's Ann Marie LaFlamme and photojournalist Joel Deaner have the details on the decision.
