New Law Means More Powerful Fourth of July Fireworks

Posted: Updated:

A new state law means more powerful fireworks are legal this Fourth of July.

Aerial fireworks were illegal last year, including things like bottle rockets or mortars of any size.

One fireworks vendor in Traverse City says sales have already tripled because of the new law. The fire chief says you must be 18-years-old to buy fireworks and it is illegal to use them under the influence of alcohol. He says you should follow the directions closely and never let children use them unsupervised.

A new Traverse City ordinance bans fireworks from being used on city property including parks and within 500 feet of city beaches. It is also illegal to use fireworks in national forests.

9 and 10's Kyle Mitchell and photojournalist Tyler Hampton have more on the new law and how to stay safe this Fourth of July.
