Cleaning Up Area Beaches Keeps Tourists Coming and Great Lakes Healthy

Posted: Updated:

Dozens of volunteers walked the beaches in Traverse City today, cleaning up the shoreline.

They collected more than 50 pounds of garbage and thousands of cigarette butts.

It's all a part of the Adopt-a-Beach program, along with the Great Lakes Alliance, Watershed Council, Traverse City Young Professionals and Barefoot Wines.

Volunteers say they want generations to come to be able to enjoy the Great Lakes like they have.

Plus, clean beaches mean more visitors to the Northern Michigan area.

9&10's Kalin Franks and photojournalist  Joel Deaner have more on the program.
