New Wireless Emergency Alerts Notify Public About Severe Weather

Posted: Updated:

It will soon be even easier to know when severe weather is heading your way.

A new emergency text alert system is being rolled out across the country. Under the new system, the National Weather Service will send messages to phones capable of receiving Wireless Emergency Alerts. The system was created with F.E.M.A. and wireless carriers to notify people with alerts based on their location.

Only a fraction of the phones on the market will be able to receive alerts initially. Some phones will be able to get messages by upgrading the software.

We just got word in to the 9&10 Newsroom that the rollout for the warnings on cell phones has been delayed 7 to 10 days to fix a connectivity problem.

They are now hoping to roll this out toward the end of next week (June 28th or June 29th), assuming they get the problems fixed.
