Downtown Traverse City is only a quick boat ride from Suttons Bay for Jerry and Polly Dirvin. Whether by boat, or car, or bike, people are drawn here.
"Coming Soon" and "Now Open" signs are scattered about Front Street. Small business owners covet the popular, walkable downtown; there's only a 4% vacancy here.
Ann Nash just opened her clothing boutique downtown last Friday. She used to be just a visitor.
Cass and Front Street is a busy spot downtown, there were plans to redevelop the empty space, and when they fell through, another business owner took advantage of the vacancy.
Even though Traverse City's growing, it still feels small, and that's what keeps people like Polly and Jerry coming back.
