Duck Lake Fire Cost $3.5 Million to Fight

Posted: Updated:

The third largest fire in Michigan's history is now 100% contained, but not after costing $3.5 million to fight.

The Duck Lake fire started burning about three weeks ago after a lightning strike.

It burned more than 21,000 acres, destroying homes, outbuildings and campers.

The DNR expects to exceed its $12.5 million budget for firefighting this fiscal year because of fires like this one around the state.

The state legislature is expected to pass a bill to help cover the cost of the Duck Lake fire.

The DNR is continuing to keep a close eye on the area.

They also plan to hold a rush sale of timber in the area next Friday.
