Mackinac Island City Council Signs Memorandum for Ferries

Posted: Updated:

A memorandum signed by the Mackinac Island City Council will allow ferries to operate more freely, and avoid state intervention.

Last night, the council approved a memorandum of understanding between the mayor, ferry companies and others with a stake in the issue.

Under the agreement, ferries get some freedom to set prices in the summer, and the city has the ability to assure competition and winter travel.

The agreement also avoids legislation that could end the island's ability to regulate the ferry service at all.
