War of 1812: The Taking of Mackinac Island

Posted: Updated:

It has been called "the forgotten war."

This year marks the bicentennial of the only U.S. war to see combat on Michigan land, the War of 1812.

The first military action of that war to take place in Michigan happened at Fort Mackinac on Mackinac Island.

200 years ago, the Americans at the Fort had no clue they were about to be attacked.

Though there were no deaths during this battle, it was a very significant win for the British.  They ended up taking all of Michigan in the first year of the war.

Alex Jokich and chief photojournalist Corey Adkins were live from the Straits of Mackinac with a special report on how the British took Mackinac Island in one of the first battles of the War of 1812.

(On July 17th, the anniversary of the battle, they will be doing a reenactment at Fort Mackinac on Mackinac Island.  For more information on Fort Mackinac, check out the link posted on the left.)
