A former Rutgers student was sentenced to a 30 day jail term for spying on and intimidating his gay roommate.
Dharun Ravi was convicted of using a webcam to spy on his roommate, Tyler Clementi, who was having a sexual encounter with another man.
After learning about the incident, Clementi later committed suicide.
The punishment is far less than prosecutors wanted and the state is planning to appeal.
Along with jail time, Ravi was placed on 3 years of probation and ordered to get counseling. He also has to pay $10,000 to a community-based organization that helps victims of bias crimes.
