NEW DETAILS: Chippewa Correctional Facility Prisoner Escapes, Has Been Captured

Posted: Updated:

The investigation continues into how a prisoner, serving a life sentence at Chippewa Correctional Facility, escaped.

The acting warden says Philip Malugen took steps to hide his identity and walked out around 12:20 p.m., Wednesday.

He says it's part of their investigation to determine exactly how Malugen managed to go unnoticed.

He made it to I-75.

A driver called 911 when they noticed a man on the side of the freeway in the snow.

The Michigan State Police went to check it out and that's when they realized who he was.

They arrested him and called the prison just after 2:30 p.m. to make them aware.

Shortly after, the prison performed an emergency count to confirm Malugen was in fact missing.

He's in segregation now and will be transferred to a maximum security facility.
