The Big Three all reported some recovery in 2011, with GM recently announcing record profits for the year.
Record low interest rates helped buoy car sales toward the end of 2011. But still, many Americans choose to lease rather than buy.
Leasing provides some freedoms to drivers – driving a new vehicle that's typically out of their normal price range and allowing them to give it back as the car's value depreciates. But you always have a monthly payment to contend with.
Buying a car means higher payments but when you're done paying it off, you're in the clear and you own the car. And there are no annual mileage limits.
