Feedback at 5:00- Should The U.S. Have Dollar Coin?
Posted:
Updated:
We've told you before how the U-S Mint was planning to stop making dollar coins because there are so many sitting around – more than a billion in government vaults.
Now, two US Senators want dollar bills to go away in favor of the coin.
Republican John McCain of Arizona and Democrat Tom Harkin of Iowa say this will reduce wasteful spending in the long run.
The Senate introduced a bill Tuesday mandating the Federal Reserve help people get used to coins.
Some say bills wear out too fast and have to be replaced much more often than coins.
Last year, the Government Accountability Office found that using coins could save more than five-billion-dollars over 30 years.
Problem is: most Americans are against carrying more change.
What do you think: should we switch to dollar coins or keep the bills? Why or why not? Post your comments below for tonight's "Feedback at 5:00."
