WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says he's sending 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan at "the fastest pace possible." The White House has released excerpts from the speech the president plans to deliver later this evening at West Point. Obama says those new troops will target the Taliban insurgency and secure the cities. He says troops will start coming home in July of 2011.

FORT LEAVENWORTH, Kan. (AP) — The president's new Afghan war strategy is already drawing reaction. The former U.S. ambassador to Iraq says the change in strategy and 30,000 additional troops are essential to success. But the Rev. Pat Robertson says the U.S. should get out of Afghanistan. He calls it a corrupt "narco state" ruled by warlords.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. and Russia are laboring to reach a new arms control agreement to succeed the one that expires Dec. 5. The aim is to reduce their nuclear arsenals still more. Both President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev (dih-MEE'-tree med-VYEH'-dyev) are pressuring their negotiators.

DETROIT (AP) — Just eight months into the job, General Motors CEO Fritz Henderson is out. GM's board decided that things weren't changing fast enough. The company's chairman will take over temporarily while an international search is held to find a new CEO.

NEW YORK (AP) — Talk show host Regis Philbin is said to be fine after hip replacement surgery this morning. Philbin, who is 78, is expected to return to "Live! With Regis and Kelly" after the first of the year. Two years ago, he had triple heart bypass surgery.
