Firearm deer season is officially over and fewer hunters went home with a buck this year.
The Department of Natural Resources says the weather may have played a role in the smaller herd. Between a rough winter last year and lack of snow this year, hunting proved to be little more difficult.
The DNR says early hunting estimates could be in sometime next week. Stacey Skrysak and Photojournalist Jordan Nagel have more on why Northern Michigan hunters saw fewer bucks.
Wouldn't be surprised if coyotes have played a role in the reduced number of deer. Sometimes we will be sound asleep only to be
awkened by the sound of coyotes nearby, attacking their prey. We used to have a lot of deer here near our farm and think a part of the problem could be the increased number of coyotes. Their attacks at night are chilling to listen to. Just sickening.
I would believe the weather to be a big factor in the low deer harvest. The cool wet summer also provided a lot of food.
Baiting is the worse thing to do, it makes welfare cases of our deer and makes hunters lazy.
I hunted all archery season without seeing a single deer. Lucky enough to shoot a six point opening day but continued to hunt the remaining part of the rifle season without seeing another deer. I believe there are more coyotes per square mile now than there are deer.
Im sure it is a combo of many things but the deer numbers are way down. I know from talking to many people that many tags went unfilled this year..including mine. I spent 50 plus hours in the woods over the week of thanksgiving and I did not see a single deer. NOT ONE. You can't tell me the baiting ban did not cause that or at least play a big role.
The DNR should check up on how the farmers hand the permits out to anybody and what gets harvested. People shooting anything and everything pretty much wrecked my daughter and my season. This has been the worst season, as far as seeing deer, I've had in many years.
For the state to ban deer baiting there sure appears to me that a lot of beets, carrots, corn ,and apples are sold around the state. seems to me everyone is selling baiting food.
I have never used bait to lure deer.
My wife and I had one of the best seasons. We filled all our tags with no bairing.
Its called work scout out your area, Do your work and its easy to fill tags.
No baiting means less hunters and less young hunters. The kids may go out 2 or 3 times and see nothing, that is why they become not intreasted. No shooting Ive noticed this for the past 5 years it has been less and less every year. DNR can not manage the deer herd in Michigan, if there isnt one and thats what they want.
the DNR has been blaming the ever decreasing deer populationon everthing except the true problem wolfs they are killing of every deer there is in the U.P. and they are killing all of the bucks first not from theyre selection just because a buck is generally heavier than a doe and thus less likely to outrun a predator for as long of a distance as the does and they just released another pack of 7 wolves near naubinway your bait and car deer accidents hardly even make a dent compared to what the wolves have done
I know that the baiting ban has caused an issue in the lower peninsula, but I don't think it can account for the low deer harvest this year. I hunted in the U.P. where baiting is legal. In 8 days, I only saw 3 deer does and bucks combined. This is the same blind where in the past I have seen 5-10 per day!! I feel last years long winter made a huge dent in the population. This year's long indian summer did not help matters much either. The deer that remained were just not moving if bait was available or not. Hopefully next year will be better.
I know DNR is against any baiting due to the so called TB out break in michigan. They don't want the deer to be close to each other while feeding, but have the ever looked at a field in early spring when the snow comes off and see how many deer are out in that field. It is ubsurd to think that TB has only been a problem recently. Hunters back in the day remember seeing the white spots in deer when they shot them just did not know what it was at the time. TB has been around for ever in the deer herd. With the harsh winters that we often get in michigan, I think baiting should be allowed because it helps the deer through the tough winters.
I hunt pretty hard starting oct 1st and ending Dec 31st. late season being my favorite. This yr was the worst yr for deer. I wish I could say I saw does, but in two months of hunting archery and gun, I can count on two hands total deer. Of course we obey the laws and don't bait, but I track, observe, scout, use and dress appropriatly and never fired my rifle and only harvested a doe in archery and have yet to see any horns except for a button buck. The winter was hard last yr and I think we lost more then the DNR accounted for. I think our coyote population is growing immensly, therefore, having an effect on fawns in the spring and I am in favor of the no baiting, as it protect the heath of our deer, but in the end, will cause them to potentially less noctornal. Just hope for a mild winter to restore the population and a better deer management MI program from the DNR.
This baiting ban is totally obsurd. The DNR have done a great job at hurting hunting sales in this great state of Michigan. No bait means fewer jobs and sales from the growers and fewer sales of deer hunting licenses which ultimately leads to fewer hunters. I know many will disagree with me on baiting, however I feel that baiting is a part of hunting. For those of you who feel that it isn't; please tell me how you fish??? I know you dont bait your hook right? You just let a metal hook sit there in hopes of a bite.
The Michigan DNR seriously needs to reconsider this baiting ban and what it has done to our hunting economy. There is absolutely no reason why a hunter should not be able to use shelled corn to bait. It is extremely easy to broadcast corn around so no deer witll share the same kernel of corn. C'mon Michigan DNR, open your freeking eyes!
Not being able to bait and feed the deer mean less deer in the woods and the number of permits given to the farmers for so called crop damage that they hand out to anybody willing to shot anything.
The rough weather last winter and endless crop damage permits to farmers, which the DNR never checks up on, caused our season to be terrible. You can't see what isn't there.
