WASHINGTON (AP) — As the Senate begins debate on health care reform, the moderate senators whose votes will be critical to the outcome are already coming under pressure. A group opposed to a government insurance plan is running an ad that targets 14 centrist lawmakers. It urges voters to tell them to oppose the public option. The Senate bill would establish one, but it would let states opt out of it.
WASHINGTON (AP) — He's already told the top officials in his administration what he's decided to do in Afghanistan, and now President Barack Obama is getting ready to spell it out to the American people in a speech tomorrow night. He's also been making phone calls to key allies around the world. Obama will also have to win over some Democrats in Congress who already want to set conditions on a U.S. troop buildup. LONDON (AP) — Britain's Foreign Office says that a racing yacht carrying five U.K. nationals has been stopped by Iranian naval vessels, and the five are now in Iran. Government officials say the yacht may have strayed inadvertently into Iranian waters when it was stopped last week. GSTAAD, Switzerland (AP) — It's not clear if film director Roman Polanski has been able to post the $4.5 million bail that would allow him to be released from a Swiss prison. Polanski remains behind bars. Under the conditions of his bail, he would have to stay at his chalet in a luxury resort while Swiss authorities decide whether to send him to the United States, where he's wanted for having sex with a 13-year-old girl. UNDATED (AP) — It's the biggest fine ever assessed for an offense at a Grand Slam tennis tournament. A tennis official says Serena Williams will have to pay more than $82,000 for her tirade against a lineswoman at the U.S. Open. And if there's a similar episode at one of the big tennis events in the next two years, she could be suspended from the tournament. Williams says she's glad to have "closure."
