BOSTON (AP) — Jamie Langenbrunner and Zach Parise (puh-REE'-see) scored shootout goals to make goaltender Martin Brodeur a winner on the day he became the NHL's all-time minutes leader in the New Jersey Devils' 2-1 win over the Boston Bruins.
Brodeur surpassed Hall of Famer Patrick Roy for the most minutes played. The 37-year-old Brodeur now has 60,280. Roy played 60,235. The loss snapped Boston's season-high four-game winning streak. Blake Wheeler, who had Boston's only goal in regulation, had the Bruins' lone score in the shootout. With the shootout tied 1-1 after Parise's and Wheeler's goals, Langenbrunner beat goaltender Tuukka Rask between the pads. Sabres 4, Flyers 2. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Buffalo's Tim Connolly scored twice in the third period and added two assists to help the Sabres defeat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-2 and snap a four-game losing streak. Drew Stafford, who also had an assist, and Paul Gaustad scored goals for the Sabres, who hadn't won since defeating the Flyers here 3-2 on Nov. 14. Mike Richards and Braydon Coburn scored for the Flyers, who returned home after losing three times on a five-game road trip. Connolly lifted a wrist shot from the slot high over Philadelphia goaltender Ray Emery to break a 2-2 tie at 5:27 in the final period. He scored again at 10:18 when his shot bounced off Emery's mask. Wild 5, Avalanche 3. ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Chuck Kobasew had a hat trick and Andrew Brunette scored the winning goal on a power midway through the third period, leading the Minnesota Wild past the Colorado Avalanche 5-3. Kobasew added an empty-net goal with 17.9 seconds left to complete his second career hat trick. Owen Nolan scored once and Niklas Backstrom stopped 31 shots for Minnesota in the opener of a home-and-home series. Kobasew's other hat trick was Jan. 24, 2006, at Colorado. Kyle Quincey, Paul Stastny and Chris Stewart scored for the Avalanche, 1-5-4 in their last 10 trips to Minnesota. Islanders 3, Penguins 2. UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) — John Tavares scored on a rebound with 6:12 left to lift the New York Islanders to a rare come-from-behind 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Josh Bailey and Sean Bergenheim added goals and Dwayne Roloson made 19 saves as New York scored two goals in the final period for its second win in three games. Evgeni Malkin and Matt Cooke scored for Pittsburgh and Brent Johnson made 34 saves. The Islanders killed off five power play chances in snapping Pittsburgh's three-game winning streak. Roloson now has 77 saves in the last two games after stopping a regular season franchise-record 58 shots against Toronto. New York entered the game 0-7-3 when trailing after two periods. But Bergenheim and Tavares each scored in the final period to end the streak. Ducks 3, Blackhawks 0. ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Teemu Selanne (TAY'-moo suh-LAH'-nay) scored twice on the power play, defenseman Nick Boynton also connected with the man advantage and Jean-Sebastien Giguere (zhee-GEHR') posted his first shutout of the season, leading the Anaheim Ducks to a 3-0 victory that snapped the Chicago Blackhawks' eight-game winning streak. Giguere made 28 saves in his 32nd career shutout. He continually frustrating a high-powered offense that had outscored its opponents 34-13 during the streak — which fell one game short of tying the franchise record set last December. The Blackhawks, who started the day two points behind San Jose for the league's best record, were shut out for only the second time this season. Flames 3, Red Wings 0. DETROIT (AP) — Miikka Kiprusoff (MEE'-kuh KIP'-ruh-sahf) made 40 saves for his 32nd career shutout in the Calgary Flames' 3-0 victory over slumping Detroit. The Red Wings haven't scored in 153 minutes, 22 seconds. The Red Wings have been shut out in consecutive games for the first time since December 2001 and the first time at home since 1977. On Wednesday night, they lost 2-0 to Atlanta. Jamie Lundmark, Nigel Dawes and Olli Jokinen scored for Calgary. Thrashers 6, Hurricanes 4. RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Rich Peverly scored the fourth of Atlanta's five third-period goals with 6:03 left to help the Thrashers rally for a 6-4 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes. Ilya Kovalchuk had a goal and an assist, Evander Kane, Slava Kozlov, Marty Reasoner and Maxim Afinogenov also scored, and Tobias Enstrom had three assists for the Thrashers, 6-1-3 in their last 10 games. Ondrej Pavelec made 32 saves. Erik Cole had a goal and an assist, and Sergei Samsonov, Matt Cullen and Stephane Yelle also scored for the Hurricanes. Carolina had won three in a row at home before blowing a 4-1 third-period lead against the Thrashers. Maple Leafs 6, Panthers 4. SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — Niklas Hagman and Phil Kessel each scored two goals to lift the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 6-4 victory over the Florida Panthers. Alexei Ponikarovsky had a goal and three assists. Matt Stajan added an empty-netter with 4 seconds remaining, and Jonas Gustavsson stopped 26 shots. Dmitry Kulikov scored twice for Florida, and Radek Dvorak and Michael Frolik had goals early in the first period. Tomas Vokoun made 27 saves for the Panthers, who have lost three straight. Hagman beat Vokoun with a shot at 12:26 in the third period to make it 5-4 and give the Maple Leafs, coming off a 4-3 victory in Tampa Bay on Wednesday night, their first lead of the night. Lightning 5, Rangers 1. TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Kurtis Foster had two goals, Steven Stamkos added his team-high 16th and the Tampa Bay Lightning routed New York 5-1. That spoiled Rangers coach John Tortorella's first game against his former team. Tortorella, fired by Tampa Bay following the 2007-08 season, spent seven seasons with the Lightning, leading them to the 2004 Stanley Cup title. Marty St. Louis had three assists, and Steve Downie and Paul Szczechura also scored for the Lightning. Mike Smith made 26 saves, allowing only Ryan Callahan's late third-period goal. Blues 3, Predators 1. NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Chris Mason made 37 saves, and Brad Boyes, David Backes and Paul Kariya scored in the St. Louis Blues' 3-1 victory over Nashville. With the victory, the Blues ended the Predators' winning streak at seven and also snapped their home winning streak at seven. Dave Scatchard scored for the Predators. Coyotes 5, Stars 2. GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Lauri Korpikoski scored his first two goals of the season and the Phoenix Coyotes beat the Dallas Stars 5-2. Robert Lang, Adrian Aucoin and Zbynek Michalek (zuh-BEE'-nihk muh-KAHL'-ihk) also scored to help the Coyotes snap a two-game losing streak. Matthew Lombardi and Scottie Upshall each had three assists for Phoenix in its fifth straight victory over Dallas. Brenden Morrow and Mike Ribiero scored third-period goals for the Stars. Sharks 5, Oilers 4, SO. EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Patrick Marleau scored three goals, and Joe Pavelski had the lone shootout goal in the San Jose Sharks' 5-4 victory over the Edmonton Oilers. Marleau completed the hat trick with a short-handed goal with 1:26 left in regulation. Ryane Clowe also scored for the Sharks. Ryan Potulny scored twice in regulation for Edmonton, and Dustin Penner and Gilbert Brule added goals.
