BOSTON (AP) — New Jersey's Martin Brodeur was on the winning side on the night he broke the record for the most career minutes played in the NHL, with the Devils beating the Boston Bruins 2-1 in a shootout victory.
Jamie Langenbrunner and Zach Parise scored the shootout goals for New Jersey, which moved within a point of the Eastern Conference lead. Goaltender Brodeur, who made 32 saves, surpassed Hall of Famer Patrick Roy for the most minutes played. The 37-year-old Brodeur has played 60,280. Roy played 60,235. Parise opened the scoring in the second period. Blake Wheeler tied it early in the third and had Boston's lone shootout goal. Islanders 3, Penguins 2 In Uniondale, New York, John Tavares scored off a rebound with six minutes left to give New York a comeback victory over Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh. Josh Bailey and Sean Bergenheim also scored and Dwayne Roloson made 19 saves for the Islanders. Evgeni Malkin and Matt Cooke scored for Pittsburgh. Flames 3, Red Wings 0 In Detroit, Miika Kiprusoff made 40 saves for his second shutout of the season and 32nd overall, leading Calgary over slumping Detroit. Detroit hasn't scored in 153 minutes. The Red Wings have been shut out in consecutive games for the first time since December 2001 and the first time at home since 1977. Jamie Lundmark and Olli Jokinen each had a goal and an assist, Nigel Dawes also scored for the Flames. The Red Wings have lost four in a row at Joe Louis Arena for the first time in almost two years. Ducks 3, Blackhawks 0 In Anaheim, California, Chicago's bid to tie a franchise-record winning streak was ended by Anaheim. Teemu Selanne scored twice on the power play for the Ducks, who stopped the Blackhawks' streak at eight. Jean-Sebastien Giguere had his first shutout of the season and 32nd of his career, making 28 saves and continually frustrating a Chicago team that had outscored its opponents 34-13 during the streak. Defenseman Nick Boynton also had a power-play goal. Sabres 4, Flyers 2 In Philadelphia, Buffalo won its first game in five, overcoming Philadelphia. Tim Connolly scored twice in the third period and had two assists for the Sabres. Drew Stafford had a goal and an assist, and Paul Gaustad also scored. Mike Richards and Braydon Coburn found the net for the Flyers. Lightning 5, Rangers 1 In Tampa, Florida, Tampa Bay spoiled New York coach John Tortorella's first game against his old team New York. Tortorella, fired by the Lightning following the 2007-08 season, spent seven seasons with Tampa Bay, leading them to the 2004 Stanley Cup title. Kurtis Foster had two goals, Steven Stamkos added his team-high 16th and Steve Downie and Paul Szczechura also scored for the Lightning. Ryan Callahan's late third-period goal was the sole goal for the Rangers.. Blues 3, Predators 1 In Nashville, Tennessee, Nashville's seven-game winning streak was ended by St. Louis. Chris Mason made 37 saves for the Blues, who got goals from Brad Boyes, David Backes and Paul Kariya. Dave Scatchard scored for the Predators, who also saw a seven-game home winning streak snapped. Wild 5, Avalanche 3 In St. Paul, Minnesota, Chuck Kobasew notched his second career hat trick, lifting Minnesota over Colorado. Andrew Brunette scored the winner for Minnesota on a third-period power play, while Owen Nolan also scored. Kobasew's other hat trick was also against the Avalanche, in 2005-06. Colorado's Kyle Quincey, Paul Stastny and Chris Stewart scored. Maple Leafs 6, Panthers 4 In Sunrise, Florida, Niklas Hagman and Phil Kessel each scored two goals in Toronto's win over Florida. Alexei Ponikarovsky had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs, while Matt Stajan added an empty-netter with 4 seconds remaining. Dmitry Kulikov scored twice for Florida, and Radek Dvorak and Michael Frolik added goals. Thrashers 6, Hurricanes 4 In Raleigh, North Carolina, Atalanta rattled on five goals in the third period to overwhelm Carolina. Ilya Kovalchuk had a goal and an assist, while Rich Peverly, Evander Kane, Slava Kozlov, Marty Reasoner and Maxim Afinogenov all scored for the Thrashers. Erik Cole had a goal and an assist for Carolina, and Sergei Samsonov, Matt Cullen and Stephane Yelle also scored.
