WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says he "has the information he wants," and now President Barack Obama is expected to outline his strategy for Afghanistan next week, possibly in an address to the nation. Military officials and others expect him to choose a middle-ground option involving the deployment of as many as 35,000 additional U.S. forces.
KABUL (AP) — Afghanistan's president may be trying to make good on his pledge to crack down on corruption. The Afghan attorney general's office says 15 current and former Afghan officials are under investigation for possible corruption. It's a problem that has caused international leaders to threaten to withhold troops and development aid. WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal officials are fining three airlines a total of $175,000 for their role in the stranding of passengers overnight on an airport tarmac in Minnesota this summer. The flight was on its way from Houston to Minneapolis carrying 47 passengers when thunderstorms forced it to divert to Rochester. The airport closed, and an airline Mesaba employee refused to open the terminal for the stranded passengers. FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Authorities in Kentucky are set to release findings from an investigation into the death of a census worker. The worker was found hanging from a tree with the word "fed" scrawled on his chest. State police have scheduled a news conference this afternoon at their crime lab. Investigators so far haven't said whether the death was homicide, suicide or an accident. BRUSSELS (AP) — A doctor who discovered that a Belgian man had been wrongly diagnosed as being in a vegetative state says he is reexamining dozens of other cases. The doctor says he has discovered some degree of consciousness using state-of-the-art equipment with other patients, but won't say how many.
