After the first full week of firearm deer season, many Northern Michigan businesses are saying numbers are way down - as much as 65 percent in some places.
In Brethren in Manistee County, business owners say it's coming at a very bad time considering this tough economy.
The area was already hit hard by a slow summer, so many business owners say they were hopeful for a big boost from hunters this fall.
But as 9&10's Kalee Iacoangeli and photojournalist Jordan Nagel report, hunters themselves are looking to save money this year and that's forcing some businesses to consider closing their doors.
the dnr is considering a baiting permit 15-20 dollars per permit that about another 8.2 million to 11 million in revs .. now if you read thr dnr online post where it says that the deer population has been lowered for what ever reason that leaves us hunters with less deer to see combine that with the worst deer management ive ever seen in my life and you get the complaints of no deer.. so for the 10th time please urge your dnr to put some kind of qdma in place , it would take 3 short years and you business people will see people will start to see hunters in the deer season instead of loosing money... if anyone thinks this is wrong than look at leelanau countys bucks now.....
THIS IS THE END MY FRIENDS. THE GOOD OLD DAYS OF THE 199OS AND EARLY 2000S AND SUCH ARE GONE FOREVER. ANYONE REMEMBER WAITING IN LINE JUST TO GET IN A BAR THIS TIME OF YEAR? IT WAS A FUN PROFITABLE RIDE... BUT ALL GOOD THINGS COME TO AN END./
I think the hunters that did come up to hunt didn't see the deer they did before. Baiting is illegal but its nothing to watch a semi load to be sold in a couple days. So the illegal hunters are upsetting the legal hunters.
