WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate has a test vote on a health care reform bill set for tomorrow night. The Democrats' bill aims to expand coverage and curb the growth in health care spending, while ending insurance industry practices such as denying coverage because of pre-existing conditions. Republicans say it makes no sense, but Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn has backed off a threat to have the entire 2,000 page bill read on the Senate floor.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco isn't waiting for Washington to overhaul health care. It's created its own city-run universal health care plan. Healthy San Francisco is not insurance and not valid outside the city, but it assigns patients a home-base clinic, provides preventive exams and long-term care and requires employers to contribute to their workers' health care. TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. (AP) — The military is conducting experiments with troops aimed at better predicting who's at most risk for post-traumatic stress disorder. The research is aimed at understanding the underlying triggers and providing early help to the psychologically wounded. MIR ALI, Pakistan (AP) — Intelligence officials say two missiles fired by a U.S. drone have hit a suspected militant compound in northwestern Pakistan, killing at least eight militants. It's the second attack in North Waziristan this week. Insurgents are believed to be fleeing there from South Waziristan where the army is conducting an offensive. KABUL (AP) — Thirteen people are dead after a suicide bomber on a motorcycle attacked a busy city square in western Afghanistan. Several children are said to be among the 30 wounded.
