Around 70 Army National Guard Soldiers from the Sault Ste. Marie based 1437th Multirole Bridge Company are leaving to serve overseas.
Tonight, Thursday, the community gathered for a deployment ceremony to say goodbye.
The unit will spend approximately two months in Fort McCoy, Wisconsin training.
Then, they will spend a year in Iraq building and maintaining bridges.
The troops leave Sault Ste. Marie tomorrow from the Armory at 8:00 a.m.
The community is encouraged to show support along their route.
They will first travel down Portage Ave. to Ashman St. From there, they will turn onto 3-Mile Rd. until they reach I-75. They'll travel I-75 to M-28 and then take M-28 to M-117. From there they will get on US-2.
9&10's Christina Vecchioni and photojournalist were at the ceremony and have more details after talking to some soldiers and their families.
I want to thank the community for all the support for our soldiers and their families. Please keep the soldiers and their families in your prayers and for a safe return home. Melissa wife of SGT Raymond Walters
