LeRoy Elementary School is taking precautions against bacteria in its water supply. The Health Department says a routine test revealed coliform bacteria, which acts as an indicator of contamination.
The school made an announcement and sent a memo to parents yesterday. They are taping off water fountains and passing out water bottles until the problem is fixed. The school's wells will be chlorinated tonight to flush the system. The school will not allow students or staff to drink from the water supply until the re-tests come back clean.
I am upset that my child's school has been so evasive about this....anyone with internet access can look this problem up and see that it is a much bigger problem than what the school is letting on. This is most likely a contamination of the WELL with a pathogen (bacteria/virus) and needs more than a flushing with chlorine. The school should have shut down to fix this problem; giving out bottled water "as a precaution" but still allowing the kids to use the toilets and sinks makes NO SENSE! I am very dissapointed.
What parents were told was that the water was being tested. Parents were also told that they should be able to use the water by Tuesday. They did not mention that they had already failed two different water samples.
