US: Ex-Detroit convention center boss helped FBI
Posted: 11/17/2009

DETROIT (AP) — Federal prosecutors in Detroit say the former head of the downtown convention center helped them catch some big fish in a long-running corruption investigation.

Prosecutors are recommending no more than 11 months in prison for Lou Pavledes (Pav-LEE'-dis) when he is sentenced Thursday. They say the former manager of Cobo Center has provided "substantial assistance" to the FBI.

Pavledes pleaded guilty last year to structuring bank deposits to conceal nearly $100,000 in kickbacks from a contractor.

Prosecutors say Pavledes supplied information that led to phone wiretaps, which eventually led to corruption charges against former Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers and others. They have pleaded guilty.

Conyers will be sentenced Jan. 15.
