Smart plea...Fort Hood probe...Iran death sentences

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — One of two people charged in the 2002 abduction of Elizabeth Smart has pleaded guilty to federal charges, including kidnapping. Wanda Barzee faces up to life in prison. She was accused along with her husband of abducting Smart from her family's Salt Lake City home. Brian Mitchell faces a federal competency hearing on November 30th.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon is planning a military-wide investigation following this month's deadly shooting rampage at Fort Hood, Texas. An Army psychiatrist is accused of killing 13 people. Today a Pentagon spokesman confirmed that what was originally to be a probe by the Army will be a broader examination that goes beyond the alleged actions of Nidal Malik Hasan (nih-DAHL' mah-LEEK' hah-SAHN').

MIAMI (AP) — Prosecutors in Miami are urging a federal judge to impose maximum prison sentences on five men convicted of plotting to destroy Chicago's 110-story Sears Tower and bomb FBI offices. Three days of sentencing hearings begin tomorrow. The ringleader of the scheme faces up to 70 years in prison, while his four coconspirators would be up to 50 years.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iranian state television reports five people have been sentenced to death over the unrest that followed the country's disputed June presidential election. Three other people previously received death sentences. Iran was rocked by massive protests by opponents claiming that President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (ah-muh-DEE'-neh-zhahd) won re-election by fraud.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Astronauts aboard the shuttle Atlantis continue a methodical inspection of the spacecraft's protective heat panels for possible damage during yesterday's launch. NASA says a quick check of launch time video showed nothing of concern. Atlantis is scheduled to dock with the International Space Station tomorrow.
