WASHINGTON (AP) — A Pentagon probe will look at how all branches of the armed forces -- not just the Army -- keep an eye out for potential problems within their ranks. The probe, which is still in the planning stages, comes in the aftermath of the deadly shooting rampage at Fort Hood in Texas, allegedly carried out by an Army psychiatrist.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Army officials say suicides among soldiers will likely top last year's total. However they also say the pace of such deaths is declining, which may be an indication the Army's efforts to gain control is working. A total of 140 active duty soldiers are believed to have committed suicide this year, which equals last year's confirmed figure. SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — One of two people charged in the 2002 abduction of Elizabeth Smart has pleaded guilty to federal charges. In a deal with prosecutors, Wanda Barzee pleaded guilty today in Salt Lake City to charges of kidnapping and unlawful transportation of a minor. SANFORD, N.C. (AP) — Police in Fayetteville, North Carolina, say they'll file additional charges in the death of a 5-year-old girl. The body of Shaniya (shuh-NY'-uh) Davis was found yesterday. Her mother has been charged with human trafficking, after police said the young girl had been offered up for prostitution. A man is accused of kidnapping. OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A suspect in the killing of four people in Oklahoma City has surrendered to authorities. Two of David Tyner's alleged victims were pregnant, including a prostitute featured in the HBO reality series "Cathouse" about a legal brothel in Nevada. The bodies were found in a burning home.
