Dispute Between Two Men Turns Into Murder
Posted: 11/16/2009

A fight between two men turned ugly early Monday morning. Now, one of them is dead and the other is in jail.

Police say the fight was a continuation of a dispute earlier in the evening.

This fight, however, turned deadly when they say one of the men pulled out a knife.

The stabbing happened around one o'clock Monday morning in the driveway of a home on French Road in Leelanau County's Leland Township.

Police say the suspect ran to his car and drove off after stabbing the victim. Meanwhile, a friend rushed the injured man to the hospital, but he later died.

Several officers began searching for the suspect.

"During the course of the evening he had left the area and was driving around I presume trying to figure out what to do," says Sheriff Mike Oltersdorf with the Leelanau County Sheriff's Department.

Eventually, officers were able to connect with the suspect through his cell phone. After about four hours, a deputy was able to convince him to surrender peacefully.

"Who knows what he would have done on a traffic stop," Oltersdorf says. "So it was a great relief having him off the streets."

Police plan to release the name of the victim Tuesday morning after all family members have been identified.

The suspect has been booked in jail 13 other times, but police say none of them for violent offenses. He now faces a charge of murder.

9&10's Ryan Raiche and Photojournalist Jeremy Erickson have more on what lead to the stabbing and the arrest.
