Posted: 11/15/2009

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans are blasting the decision to put five men accused of plotting the Sept. 11 attacks on trial in New York City. Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani says it will increase the security threat to the city and give radical Islamists a platform to propagate their ideology. Michigan Rep. Pete Hoekstra (HUK'-struh) predicts the defendants will do everything they can to disrupt the trial and "make it a circus."

CHICAGO (AP) — The governor of Illinois says a prison in his state could become the new home of some terror suspects now being held at Guantanamo Bay. Gov. Pat Quinn says the Thomson Correctional Center is being considered along with at least two other sites in Colorado and Montana. Quinn calls it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create jobs in the struggling area.

SHANGHAI (AP) — President Barack Obama has begun a three-day visit to China. He arrived in Shanghai in a driving rain, after taking part in a summit of Asia-Pacific leaders in Singapore. Tomorrow Obama meets with local politicians and holds an American-style town hall discussion with Chinese university students.

ROME (AP) — The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization says it's reached a deal with the Islamic Development Bank for $1 billion in funding to help develop agriculture in poor countries. The announcement comes on the eve of a three-day summit in Rome on ways to help farmers, livestock herders and fishermen produce more food.

SEATTLE (AP) — Some of the biggest U.S. charities are bracing for a disappointing Christmas because of the economic downturn. A survey being released tomorrow by Harris Interactive finds only 38 percent of Americans say they are more likely to give a charitable gift as a holiday present this year, compared to 49 percent last year.
