Burqa-clad insurgents killed after opening fire on anti-Taliban mayor's home » View Picture » Play Video » Feedback (0)
PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — Police say three militants who were killed during an attack on the home of an anti-Taliban mayor in Pakistan had disguised themselves in burqas.
Police say security guards challenged three men wearing the all-encompassing garments, prompting the militants to throw off their disguises and open fire. The three were killed and a gunbattle raged with the remaining insurgents, who ultimately fled. Insurgents have made several attempts to assassinate the mayor (Mohammad Fahim Khan), who says the attacks won't weaken his resolve against militants. He's the second mayor to be attacked in the last week who has organized a local militia to fight against the Taliban. A suicide bomber hit a crowded market outside the main northwestern city of Peshawar last Sunday, killing 12 people, including a mayor who once supported but then turned against the Taliban.
