WASHINGTON (AP) — The commander of the U.S. Central Command says a decision is near on sending more American forces to Afghanistan. General David Petraeus commented during an interview with CNN before heading into a meeting with President Barack Obama and his advisers about a new strategy in the eight-year-old Afghan war. The White House has said it'll be several weeks before Obama makes his decision.

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — President Barack Obama has marked the nation's observance of Veterans Day by laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery. He and first lady Michelle Obama then talked with relatives of soldiers buried at Arlington who died in Afghanistan and Iraq.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The suspect in last week's deadly shooting rampage at Fort Hood will be tried in a military justice system where no one has been executed in nearly 50 years. Major Nidal Hasan is charged with the deaths of 13 people. His fate will be determined by a senior Army officer, and ultimately the president, who must personally approve any military execution.

BOSTON (AP) — New research suggests that drug treatment offers just as much relief from clogged kidney arteries as angioplasty and is less risky. British researchers compared patients with severe kidney blockages and found one group fared no better than the other. The report appears in The New England Journal of Medicine.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks have ended the day with modest gains, fueled in part by a weaker dollar, higher gold and oil prices, and word from Federal Reserve officials that borrowing rates will remain low. The Dow gained 44 points.
