WASHINGTON (AP) — Investigative officials say the Fort Hood shooting suspect will apparently face charges in military court. Major Nidal Malik Hasan is accused of killing 13 people and wounding 29 others. A lawyer contacted by his family says he has doubts whether his client can get a fair trial because of widespread coverage of the case. A military hospital in San Antonio says Hasan is in stable condition and is now able to speak.
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A man accused of shooting a Kansas abortion provider says he has no regrets about committing the crime because he believes it saved the lives of unborn children. Scott Roeder spoke to the AP in a telephone call from jail. He says he'll argue during his trial that he was justified in shooting Dr. George Tiller. RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to block tomorrow's execution of convicted sniper John Allen Muhammad. He's scheduled to die by injection at a Virginia prison for the slaying of a man at a gas station during a three-week rampage in 2002 across Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. Muhammad's teenage accomplice, Lee Boyd Malvo, is serving a life sentence. PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) — Florida Gov. Charlie Crist is warning residents that tropical storms can still be deadly. Ida is expected to come ashore tonight on the Gulf Coast. It's expected to bring high winds and generate flooding in some areas. BLLINGS, Mont. (AP) — A coalition of environmental and American Indian groups is taking the state of Montana and two federal agencies to court. The groups hope to stop the mass slaughter of bison that migrate outside Yellowstone National Park in search of food. The killings are carried out to prevent the spread of an animal disease to cattle.
