NEW ORLEANS (AP) — It's not as strong as it was, but Ida could still pack a punch when it hits the U.S. Gulf Coast overnight. Forecasters say it's now a tropical storm, with top winds down to about 70 miles an hour.

FORT HOOD (AP) — President Barack Obama plans to attend a memorial service tomorrow honoring victims of the Fort Hood shooting rampage. Meanwhile, personnel at Fort Hood are continuing the effort to return to normal operations at the Texas base. As for the suspect, he's listed in critical but stable condition.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are sharply higher on Wall Street after a weekend meeting of world financial leaders raised hopes for the economy. Stocks also got a lift Saturday night as the House approved the health care reform bill.

BERLIN (AP) — German Chancellor Angela Merkel has joined former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and other luminaries at what was once a fortified border crossing.
