The Soo Locks are a uniquely Northern Michigan marvel, but the shipping that goes on there impacts the entire U.S. economy.

Keeping up with the progress of transportation is paramount at the locks and as freighters get bigger, the locks need to keep pace. In 1986 the "Super Lock" was proposed to handle 1,000 foot freighters; but groundbreaking didn't happen until the summer of 2009.

Now part of the money to fund construction is in place and the work has started - it's a big job.
