Army reflects...Back to the Senate...Hurricane watch for Gulf

WASHINGTON (AP) — Thursday's deadly shooting rampage at Fort Hood is prompting the Army to take a hard look at itself to make certain it doesn't happen again. Army chief of staff Gen. George Casey is warning about jumping to conclusions about the motives of The alleged gunman, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan (nih-DAHL' mah-LEEK' hah-SAHN') until investigators finish their work.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Gen. George Casey says more troops are needed in Afghanistan. The Army's chief of staff isn't saying exactly how many should be sent, but he tells NBC's "Meet the Press" that an increase would help cut the Taliban's successes as U.S. forces continue training Afghan security forces.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The focus of the health care debate is shifting back to the Senate. Majority Leader Harry Reid says the chamber has been "energized" by House's passage last night of its $1.2 trillion legislation. The vote was 220-215 with 39 Democrats voting no and one Republican in the yes column.

MIAMI (AP) — Coastal Louisiana and Mississippi are under a hurricane watch. Hurricane Ida is making its way through the Gulf of Mexico and forecasters say it could reach the northern Gulf Coast by Tuesday. A hurricane warning remains in effect for parts of the Yucatan Peninsula. Ida has top winds of 90 mph.

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (AP) — Heavy rains have been soaking El Salvador for three days. The country's interior minister more than 40 people have died in the flooding that's resulted.
